The US and Russian presidents previously discussed Middle East tensions in an hour-long phone conversation<\/strong><\/p>\n

US President Donald Trump said on Sunday he is open to Russian President Vladimir Putin serving as a mediator in the Israel-Iran conflict. In an hour-long phone call the previous day, the two leaders focused on the Middle East crisis.<\/p>\n

\u201cYeah, I would be open to it. He is ready. He called me about it,\u201d<\/em> Trump responded to ABC News\u2019 Rachel Scott, when asked about Putin\u2019s potential role in brokering peace.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe had a long talk about it. We talked about this more than his situation. This is something I believe is going to get resolved,\u201d<\/em> Trump added.<\/p>\n

After the phone call the Kremlin later said that Putin had condemned Israel\u2019s strikes on Iran and expressed concern over further escalation, while reiterating Russia\u2019s willingness to facilitate negotiations.<\/p>\n

Putin recalled that Moscow had previously proposed concrete measures to facilitate \u201cmutually acceptable agreements\u201d<\/em> in US-Iran nuclear negotiations before the current escalation, presidential aide Yuri Ushakov revealed.<\/p>\n

\u201cRussia\u2019s principled position and commitment to resolving this issue remain unchanged,\u201d<\/em> Ushakov stated. \u201cAs President Putin emphasized, we will continue to act accordingly.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Despite the cancellation of Oman-mediated nuclear negotiations between Tehran and Washington following Israel\u2019s strikes, Trump maintained that discussions continued. \u201cThey\u2019d like to make a deal. They\u2019re talking,\u201d<\/em> he said, suggesting the escalation might actually accelerate diplomacy.<\/p>\n

When asked about possible American engagement in the conflict, Trump stated: \u201cWe\u2019re not involved in it. It\u2019s possible we could get involved. But we are not at this moment involved.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

The conflict in the Middle East escalated on June 12 when Israel struck Iranian nuclear sites, killing senior military officials and prompting retaliatory missile barrages from Tehran. Both sides have exchanged fire for a third straight day.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
